Dwyane Wade opted to do the unthinkable and cash-in with the Chicago Bulls in free agency, leaving behind an impressive legacy in Miami. One of the repercussions of the decision was fracturing his relationship with Heat president Pat Riley.

Speaking with ESPN, Wade admitted he hasn’t been in contact with Riley since the 2015-16 season ended.

“I think you guys know, I haven’t talked to him,” Wade said Wednesday. “It’s as simple as that. I think I’ve been very open and honest about my respect and love with Pat. I’ve been honest that I haven’t spoken to him since the season ended.”

Wade said he holds no ill will against Riley, understanding his ‘with me or against me attitude.’

With the Bulls taking on the Heat in Miami on Thursday, Wade said he wasn’t sure what type of reception he would receive.

“I don’t know,” Wade said. “I’ve only experienced it from clapping for other guys who came back. I’ve always been appreciative of the guys who came back and the tributes they got. I have no idea.”

That sounds like some grade-A BS. Wade is the most important Heat player in franchise history (well, either him or Alonzo Mourning). The 34-year old was directly responsible for Miami winning not one, not two, but three titles during his 13-season run in South Beach. He should be widely applauded and treated like the Miami icon he is. Anything less would be insulting.

Some Heat fans may see Wade’s two-year, $47.5 million deal as a middle finger to the organization, but Riley wasn’t offering him that kind of money. Wade was never the highest paid Heat player, so when it came time to get rising cap money, he did. You can’t blame him for that. Miami should treat him right upon his return. When he retires, then, he can repair his relationship with Riley.
