This is just awful.

Chicago’s gun violence is horrifying and almost incomprehensible. According to the Chicago Tribune, which keeps a running tally of shootings, 2,739 people have been shooting victims since January 1, 2016. That’s seemingly impossibly high, yet it’s the truth.

On Friday, that violence claimed another victim, and the details are heartbreaking:

Dwyane Wade’s cousin was shot to death while pushing a child in a stroller on Chicago’s South Side, police and family said Friday.

The 32-year-old woman, apparently the unintended victim of a gang shooting, was walking around 3:30 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Calumet when two males approached another male and opened fire, police said.

The woman who was shot was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where she was pronounced dead. A relative took custody of the child, police said.

Pastor Edward Jones, a relative and family spokesperson, said the victim is a mother of four and had just had a baby. Jones said the woman and her family had recently relocated to the neighborhood and she was on her way to register her kids at school when she was shot.

That’s incredibly sad. Wade, of course, took part in the ESPY’s opening segment this summer, when he, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul called for an end to gun violence. His words might ring even truer today.
