On Wednesday, it was announced by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania that Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the winner of the 2024-25 NBA MVP Award. And while most were perhaps expecting for Gilgeous-Alexander to be the winner of the award, former MVP winner Giannis Antetokounmpo was instead taken aback by this announcement.
In a post on X, Giannis shared his thoughts on Charania’s announcement, questioning whether his social media account had been hacked.
“What??!!!! Did Shams get hacked? No way this is true??!!” wrote Antetokounmpo in a post on X.

Antetokounmpo may have been assuming that Nikola Jokic, who finished in second place in overall votes for the MVP award, would have ended up winning the award over Gilgeous-Alexander. But given the team success that the Thunder had as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, it seemed like a pretty straightforward pick for this year’s MVP award.
And while the MVP award isn’t technically supposed to be an award that takes the postseason into account, it’s hard to argue the fact that Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunder team sending Jokic’s Nuggets home in the second round didn’t at least play somewhat of a factor in the decision for Gilgeous-Alexander winning the award.
Regardless, for whatever reason, Antetokounmpo, who finished in third place in total votes in his own right, clearly didn’t expect the voting on the MVP Award to go the way that it did.
