Gregg Popovich is one of the best coaches in the NBA, and one of the greatest in league history. He has led his San Antonio Spurs to five NBA titles and has been one of the greatest examples for sustained success in the modern era.

And he isn’t a fan of the 3-point shot, even if his 2013-14 Spurs benefited greatly from it.

Pop, on the 3-point shot:

“I’ll never embrace it. I don’t think it’s basketball. I think it’s kind of like a circus sort of thing. Why don’t we have a 5-point shot? A 7-point shot? You know, where does it stop, that sort of thing. But that’s just me, that’s just old-school. To a certain degree, you better embrace it or you’re going to lose. And every time we’ve won a championship, the 3-point shot was a big part of it. Because it is so powerful and you’ve gotta be able to do it. And nobody does it better than Golden State, and you know where they’re at. So it’s important. You can’t ignore it.”

While Pop sounds like an old timer shaking his fist at the new style of ball, what the Spurs are doing this season is still very effective.

He also didn’t knock the fact that the way the Warriors have made use of the 3-pointer is undoubtedly advantageous, and that his own team benefited from it, so he’s still reasonable, even in his difference of opinion.

Sure, there has been a ton of noise surrounding the now 23-0 Warriors, but his Spurs are 18-4 and look like the next best team in the league.

They made the biggest splash in free agency this summer by getting LaMarcus Aldridge from the Portland Trailblazers, a move that many viewed as one that would almost certainly keep the Spurs dynasty intact when Tim Duncan decides to retire.

The Spurs are first in the league in defensive efficiency, and third in offensive efficiency. They are second in the league in point differential, with the Warriors being the only team looking back on them.

Playing their usual style of ball, with future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, the versatile Kawhi Leonard, speedy Tony Parker, and four time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge, the Spurs look like the usual threat in the Western Conference. This time around, they have gotten a tad younger, and have a little more star power.

They are quietly having a great season, which is amazing considering that in almost any other NBA season, they would be the headline right now.

The two teams will meet for the first time this season on January 25 at Oracle Arena. It will be the ultimate clash of new school and old school basketball that should be marked on everybody’s calendar.

The Warriors are going to keep on rolling, but it would be silly and a mistake to forget about one of the best run franchises in all of sports.
