Kareem Abdul-Jabbar library books

A Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fan decided to take out two books from Lansing School District Libraries on the Los Angeles Lakers star. Nearly forty years later, they’ve finally been returned.

The Michigan-based Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) posted on Facebook, showing two Kareem-Abdul Jabbar Books returned by a fan more than forty years after being taken out. The books appear to be in decent shape considering they were checked out December 2, 1976. The due date card is a relic of the moment.

It’s amazing the books were returned at all. Six months seems like an exorbitant amount of time not to return a book, let alone nearly forty years. The folks at CADL had to have forgotten entirely about the books. Thankfully, an honest patron decided it was time to return them.

So what’s the late fee on a book out for nearly four decades? Nothing. According to MLive, the library didn’t start charging late fees until 2012. If the fan did have to fork up late fee money, they would have to pay to replace both books, which might be harder to do now with so much time passed.

The books are now back home. Let’s hope the next person who books them out is a little less relaxed with the due date.
