Golden State Warriors star shooting guard Klay Thompson has been recovering from a torn left ACL suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals, and now he’s suffered an injury in his other leg.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Sham Charania report that Thompson suffered a lower right leg injury during a workout on Wednesday, and will undergo testing to determine the severity. Charania adds that Thompson “was unable to place weight on his lower leg injury leaving the gym today.”

It’s even more concerning after a tweet from Marc Spears of ESPN’s The Undefeated. Spears wrote, “An NBA source in the know about Klay Thompson’s injury simply answered to me: ‘Not good.'”

And the timing puts the Warriors in a particular tough spot, because they have the No. 2 pick in Wednesday night’s NBA Draft. Will Thompson’s injury impact Golden State’s plans?

The Warriors were ready to be a title contender again with the return of Thompson and a full season of Steph Curry, after having the NBA’s worst record in the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season. It was assumed that Memphis center James Wiseman made sense at No. 2, for example, giving the Warriors a big man to go with their sensational backcourt. But if Thompson’s injury is feared to be serious, perhaps the Warriors all of a sudden have more interest in a playmaking guard like LaMelo Ball or Georgia’s Anthony Edwards. Or maybe they want to trade the pick for a proven player.

It will be interesting to see how the Warriors handle their pick. And hopefully Thompson’s injury doesn’t end up being as serious as seemingly feared.

UPDATE: Well, this is bad. The fear is that Klay Thompson has suffered a torn Achilles, as first reported by Vasu Kulkarni. Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes is hearing the same, and adds that Thompson will have an MRI on Thursday morning.

UPDATE #2: Yeah, it’s the Achilles, as confirmed by Woj. Thompson will miss the season. Just brutal news.
