NBA legend LeBron James will continue his career, but it will not be with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, has informed the Lakers that he will play elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, according to a report from NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.
“BREAKING: LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul tells ESPN.” Charania wrote in a post on X.
While James is moving on from the Lakers, it’s not yet clear where he will ultimately end up, but both Charania and NBA insider Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports reported that the Golden State Warriors were interested in landing James.
On Sunday, O’Connor cited multiple sources as he reported that the Warriors are attempting to acquire Anthony Davis in a trade with the Washington Wizards and then sign James as a free agent. The trade, O’Connor reports, would include Jimmy Butler as well as draft capital.
O’Connor referred to this would-be lineup as a “roster of legends.”
“Sources say the Warriors hope adding Davis would help lure LeBron from Los Angeles to the Bay Area once free agency officially opens Tuesday. The pitch would be simple: reunite with AD, team up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, play for Steve Kerr, and chase one more championship with a roster of legends,” O’Connor wrote on Sunday.
It’s worth noting that Warriors veteran Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option Monday, which opens up the flexibility for the Warriors to pursue James.
