Marcus Smart made a very dumb play tonight.

Near the end of the second quarter, Kyrie Irving went the length of the court, doing the patented Kyrie Irving/Uncle Drew shifty, slithering through traffic in a straight line while appearing as though he’s going in multiple directions at once. It really is something.

As was his finish, a little up-and-under that rendered what little defensive resistance there was wholly ineffective:

Except, as you likely saw there, Marcus Smart knocked it back up through the hoop, a classic Nerf basketball defense utilized by older brothers in rec rooms across the country. Unfortunately, it was his own teammate, and just as unfortunately, the refs were on top of things.

Here’s a closer look, where you can see the ball doesn’t come close to going all the way through the net:

What was Smart thinking? The only real explanation is he was looking to slap the ball out of bounds to prevent a quick Golden State transition off the make, a questionable value proposition when executed properly. Instead, Smart took two points off the board.

Props to the courtside Celtics bros making the “basket counts” gesture, though. That was definitely going to work.
