Occasionally, a pro athlete is in the news for getting injured because they did something so inane that everyone does thousands of times without even thinking they could get hurt. For Rockets power forward Ryan Anderson, he got hurt by taking out the garbage.

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle tweeted that Anderson “lopped off” skin as he pushed down the trash in his trash can to make room for more trash. Anderson is questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Heat.

The only real explanation of how Anderson could have gotten hurt was something sharp was put in the trash and he cut his thumb. If anyone else has a better theory, feel free to let me know but it’s what I would think.

Now, this means that Anderson is questionable. Yeah, it seems like a dumb injury and he should be able to play through this but this injury is more whether he can effectively shoot with the skin ripped off the thumb on his shooting hand than whether he’s comfortable or healthy enough to play.

The Rockets sit third in the West and face a Heat team who is 15 games behind them, 10th in the West. Chances are, Houston could live without Anderson on Wednesday, but they’ll certainly miss the power forward’s 13.7 points per game. Maybe because of this, Anderson has learned a very important lesson. The next time you want to push down the trash, put on gloves. Because your hands have a little bit to do with being able to perform your job.
