Taj Gibson has spent his NBA career playing in Chicago, Oklahoma City and now Minnesota. But his hometown ties to Brooklyn remain strong.

On Wednesday, Gibson donated $20,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the family of a young Brooklyn mom recently killed in a shooting. Two weeks ago, 21-year-old Chynna Ann Battle was hit by a stray bullet in what investigators believe was gang activity, leaving behind a three-year-old daughter named Amelia.

The fundraising campaign was started to raise money for Amelia:

“Everything she did revolved around making sure her daughter was good. Amelia may not remember all the memories she and her mother made being that she is so young…What these cowards did to Chynna was cruel and reckless. Our family has set up this fund to assist with the day-to-day needs for Chynna Ann’s daughter. She always wanted the very best for her “Milly” and worked everyday to provide for her. She had no pride when it came to working. We really loved her for her commitment, not only to her daughter, but to our family, and other kids in the community. I’m asking anyone out the kindness of their hearts to help make sure Amelia is taking care of. No donation is too small, any amount will be of great help.”

Gibson has not commented on why he chose to help this family or how he found out about the GoFundMe campaign. Battle’s death must hit close to home as Gibson lost his six-year-old cousin to a stabbing in Brooklyn in 2014.

Whatever the reason, kudos to him for putting some of his new two-year, $28 million contract with the Timberwolves toward a great cause. Thanks to him, the campaign has now reached over $24,000 of its $30,000 goal.
