Next month, basketball phenom Victor Wembanyama will undoubtedly become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft where he will quickly become a superstar in the United States. But as he prepares to develop a massive American fanbase, he has some comments that American basketball fans won’t necessarily like.

Victor Wembanyama, who is French, recently made it clear that his goal is to beat the United States in the 2024 Olympics, which will be held in his home country of France.

“You know the Olympics are in Paris in 2024,” Wembanyama said according to ESPN. “And there could be no more perfect occasion for me to win my first title with the French national team.”

“My goal,” Wembanyama said, “is to beat Team USA in the final.”

The United States national team has won the gold medal at the last four Olympic games and has won gold at seven of the last eight Olympic games – a streak that dates back to 1996.

Meanwhile, the French national team has just two medals – both Silver – in 10 Olympic appearances. Most recently, the team won Silver at the 2020 Olympic Games, losing to the United States in the championship game.

We will have to see if Wembanyama can be the difference.
