One of Alabama’s most important coaches and recruiters, Bo Davis, surprisingly and abruptly resigned his position on Friday night. Not many details were given for his resignation, but on Sunday details did begin to emerge and it appears recruiting violations are at the heart of his resignation.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, Davis’ resignation came after he was confronted about and lied about impermissible contact with some out-of-state recruits during a period where there was to be no contact with recruits at all.

Sources tell the site that none of the recruits in question actually ended up signing with the Crimson Tide.

The depth of the impermissible contact wasn’t known, but the biggest issue may have been his inability to tell the truth when confronted over the situation, per AL.com:

The NCAA contacted Alabama’s compliance office regarding the situation, and Davis was questioned and caught being dishonest before eventually resigning, according to the source.

It will be interesting to see how the NCAA handles this case with the Crimson Tide, as it is very similar to what took place with Florida and Joker Phillips back in 2014. At that time the Gators received no penalty from the NCAA and you can bet Alabama will be looking for consistency in this case.

Davis is widely credited with helping to build one of the best defensive lines in the country, and sending many players to the NFL over the past few years.

He also has a reputation as a tireless recruiter, and was even named the No. 2 recruiter in the SEC by 247Sports for this past recruiting cycle.

Perhaps we now know why that reputation was earned, and there’s no doubt the Crimson Tide are losing a really good coach in the process.
