The last time Alabama fans saw Deshaun Watson, he was throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to beat the Crimson Tide in the national title game.

So maybe it figures that when some patrons at Innisfree Irish Pub in Tuscaloosa were not thrilled to see the former Clemson quarterback Friday. Still they were certainly acting unreasonably when they actually asked Watson and his friends to get up and leave.

Of course, it’s pretty unreasonable to deny someone service just because he played for the wrong football team. That is what some might call taking sports too seriously or even being a sore loser.

To be clear, it wasn’t the bar itself that tried to boot Watson, it was an individual patron or two. Watson presumably decided to leave because it wasn’t worth starting any trouble.

Here’s the statement Innisfree posted on its Facebook page Friday, explaining the incident and apologizing to Watson:

Over the years we have had thousands of visitors from rival schools and have always treated them fairly. Today was not any different. The unfolding of today’s events were not led by our staff or anyone employed by Innisfree Irish Pubs. Unfortunately a customer attempted to invoke the right to refuse service on our behalf and after being identified, was immediately asked to leave the premises following the incident. We apologize for any inconvenience this incident caused to our customers. We appreciate anyone that chooses to visit our establishment and hope to continue welcoming sports fans for years to come.

Sounds like the bar (and Watson) handled the situation well. There’s an entertaining irony in the guy who tried to kick Watson out getting booted instead. He wound up kicked to the curb, while Watson got to enjoy his dinner with the smug satisfaction of having everyone at the bar resent him and not be able to do a thing about it.
