Four-star quarterback Phil Jurkovec signed with Notre Dame out of high school as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2018 recruiting class. However, it never quite worked out for him with the Irish, and it sounds like he puts a lot of that blame on former head coach Brian Kelly.
In an interview with Boston Globe, Jurkovec accused Kelly of lying to his family when they expressed concern about his struggles.
“Kelly basically lied to their faces about what he would do, how he would talk to me and explain things about the future,” Jurkovec told The Globe. “He basically lied to my parents, so after that, they were done with him.”
But beyond how Kelly and the coaching staff treated Jurkovec and the rest of the players – which he says was “very badly” – Jurkovec’s biggest indictment on the former Notre Dame coaching staff was simply their coaching ability or lack thereof.
“It wasn’t as much about how they treated people — because I think they also treated people very badly, very poorly, some of the coaches there — but it was more about their lack of experience and coaching,” Jurkovec said.
Ultimately, Jurkovec left Notre Dame, transferring to Boston College ahead of the 2020 football season where he’s entering his third year as a starter. Kelly, meanwhile, left Notre Dame to become the head coach of LSU following the 2021 season.
