Officials have a tough task, as they’re expected to be in the middle of the action in any given sport without actually interfering in it. Sometimes that interference happens anyway, though, and it sure did in the Cal-Virginia basketball game Wednesday night.
Here’s Cal guard Sam Singer bringing the ball down the floor and throwing a corner pass for a teammate, which instead hit official David Hall:
What’s amazing is how Cal’s players just take this in stride, with one grabbing the loose ball after it bounces off the official and finding an open teammate under the basket for a layup. That’s pretty good awareness on something that doesn’t often happen. It didn’t wind up being enough for the Golden Bears, as they lost 56-52 to #12 Virginia in the end, but they certainly made the highlight reel here.
