Coastal Carolina University doesn’t have a major football program, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The CCU cheerleading team has been suspended indefinitely by the school pending a conduct investigation. Local TV Station WMBF reported an anonymous letter was sent to Coastal Carolina University President Dave DeCenzo alleging members of the cheerleading team had been engaging in prostitution.

The allegations didn’t stop there as the letter also stated cheerleaders had been paying others to do their homework and had been purchasing alcohol for minors.

According to The State, Vice President of University Communications William Plate Jr. didn’t give a specific reason for the suspension and didn’t disclose if the whole team or specific members were under investigation.

“At this time, we can only confirm the suspension because this is an ongoing investigation,” Plate said in an email.

Plate also didn’t confirm or deny the letter that possibly instigated the entire investigation.

The cheer and dance teams are both under the supervision of the athletics department, but department spokesman Mike Cawood and AD Matt Houge didn’t comment on the investigation.

While neither has commented, the Athletics’ department no longer has a cheerleading section on its website.

WMBF also reported the team was scheduled to compete in a cheerleading competition in Daytona Beach, Florida on April 4th, but they will no longer attend.

The local police department of Horry County has stated it isn’t currently involved in the investigation.
