The NCAA is considering changes to the college football signing period, which in this case refers to adding one in December for early signees in addition to the usual February 1 extravaganza. At one point, a potential June signing period was mooted as a possibility, but was shot down.

And based on the reactions from coaches such as West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen, you can see why the proposal didn’t have much life to it:

Holgorsen explained more (transcript via SB Nation):

“That’s the only time of the year to take two or three deep breaths is in July. So if you move that thing up, it’s non-stop, year-round recruiting from a visit perspective and all that. So, that ain’t gonna happen. There’s nobody that supports that, I don’t know who supports that. That to me is insane.”

The December signing proposal is up for vote and set for the spring, and Holgorsen (and presumably many of his fellow head coaches) are not opposed to it so long as in-season visits can be coordinated in the fall when otherwise football itself is taking up most of the coaches attention. Championship Weekend, with all Power 5 conferences now taking part and many Group of 5 conferences as well could also be used as a recruiting weekend too.

By the way, and this is totally apropos of nothing: doesn’t Dana Holgorsen look like Matthew McConaughey in that short clip? Doesn’t he really look like McConaughey in that clip? Just me?

Measured Dana Holgorsen isn’t particularly interesting. Exasperated Holgo is, and that’s the best (and sometimes only) kind of Holgo there is.
