The Big 12 is looking to expand, and many universities are trying to make their case to become one of the latest members of the conference.

One of those schools is East Carolina University, which has seen a growing football program over the past decade, and has produced some good NFL talent.

In East Carolina athletic director Jeff Compher’s letter to the Big 12, he clearly expresses his interest on ECU joining the Big 12. But in his letter, he adds that ECU would “deliver the entire State of North Carolina.”

That’s an awfully big promise, one that doesn’t seem likely to stick. For one, there are tons of universities in North Carolina. ECU is up there, but there’s also NC State, Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest… we can go on and on here.

That also may not be the best pitch to make to the Big 12, either. With HB2 causing endless controversy and having people staying away from the state in athletics, that’s perhaps not the best thing to sell to a potential conference suitor.

Geographically, East Carolina isn’t the best fit for the Big 12, but the recent success of the program might be enough to help get them into the conference.
