Rumors have beens swirling for a few weeks, but on Thursday the College Football Playoff committee named its newest members. Amongst the rumored names was ex-Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr and indeed he will be a member of the newest committee.

Carr was officially-announced along with three other new members — Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens, former Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower and former Central Michigan coach Herb Deromedi.

The four will replace outgoing members Mike Gould, Pat Haden, Tom Osborne and Mike Tranghese, whose terms have expired.

Carr is the most high profile name added to the committee that will be tasked with selecting the four teams to compete for the College Football Playoff national championship. But, equally important was the addition of two members from so-called “group of 5” conferences like Conference-USA and the Mid-American Conference.

“We are delighted that Jeff, Lloyd, Herb and Rob are joining the committee,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement. “Throughout the selection process, it was essential that the four new members have an in-depth knowledge and passion for college football. Each of these four fit that description perfectly. They will continue the high integrity of the committee.”

Carr comes in as the only member of the committee to have won a national championship, leading the Wolverines to the 1997 national title. He also sits third all-time in wins by a Michigan head coach with 122 to his name.

His addition also means that the Big Ten will have two people affiliated with conference schools in the room, as current Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez is still serving on the committee.

There are also five total conference commissioners on the committee. Joining Alavrez in the group is Clemson’s Dan Radakovich, Arkansas’ Jeff Long and Texas Tech’s Kirby Hocutt, who has been appointed the committee chairman.

It will be interesting to see how the new makeup and shakeup of the committee sees college football over the next few years, even though we know at least one thing won’t change.
