Police issued a felony warrant Thursday charging Creighton point guard Maurice Watson Jr. with first-degree sexual assault.

As of now, it’s believed Watson Jr. isn’t in custody. The 19-year-old was officially suspended by the school Feb. 13. He was already missing time due to a knee injury suffered Jan. 16.

ESPN’s report included details of the alleged incident, as well as a response from Creighton’s athletic director:

According to an incident report, a 19-year-old woman said Watson had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her in the bathroom of a midtown residence about 3 a.m. on Feb. 4.

“The core values of Creighton University and Creighton University athletics are clear and consistently communicated to our staff and student-athletes. Among them is the inalienable worth of each individual,” Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen told ESPN via text Thursday.

“Sexual assault is unacceptable, and members of the athletics staff or student-athletes who fail to uphold our standards will be held accountable.”

This is certainly an ugly incident. Watson transferred to Creighton from Boston University after his sophomore season, and hasn’t had any prior legal issues. That doesn’t really mean anything, of course.

Right now, Watson obviously isn’t talking, having refused comment to ESPN.

Nothing about this is good.
