Hurricane Matthew is set to hit the southeast on Thursday, and what’s expected to be a monumental storm has resulted in many sporting events getting canceled.
The hurricane is set to hit the south hard, with battering waves, coastal flooding, and likely beach erosion. Incredibly forceful wind conditions and potential flooding could have a substantial impact.
So far, a handful of planned events have been canceled or postponed across the southern coast of the United States. Here’s a rundown:
- Florida State announced they will likely not travel to Miami on Thursday, instead waiting for Friday to potentially make the trip. Meanwhile, the University of Miami will be closed on Thursday and Friday, as will all Miami-Dade Public schools.
- The Miami Heat have moved Wednesday’s practice to Houston to avoid Hurricane Matthew’s path.
- The Florida Panthers have postponed Thursday’s preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- UCF has postponed Friday’s night game in Orlando against Tulane due to safety concerns.
- North Greenville University has moved it’s Saturday home matchup against The Citadel from Charleston to Tigerville.
- High school sports teams are also starting to cancel and postpone scheduled events.
- This weekend’s UMG Orlando Call of Duty Tournament was canceled due to incoming weather.
- Luke Bryan even had to cancel Wednesday’s tour stop (his first on the Luke Bryan Farm Tour) in South Carolina due to evacuation orders.
Not everyone is canceling events, as the USMNT’s friendly vs Cuba in Cuba is expected to be a go – although that could change.
The list will surely grow as Hurricane Matthew approaches. Sporting events are huge, but not important enough to risk the safety of those in attendance. Hopefully, the damaged caused from Hurricane Matthew is limited as possible.
