The Iowa State women’s gymnastics season has come to an abrupt end as the school announced over the weekend that the remainder of the season has been canceled, including a special event that was slated to take place alongside the wrestling team.

On Sunday, Iowa State officially announced that the remainder of the season had been canceled due to safety concerns stemming from a lack of available student-athletes.

“After a careful and thoughtful review of the program over the last week, it became apparent that we do not have enough student-athletes available to safely compete, and thus have made the painful decision to cancel the remainder of our gymnastics season,” Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Shamaree Brown said in a statement. “The health, safety and overall welfare of our student-athletes is paramount, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are able to safely train and compete at the highest level.”

The Cyclones were 2-8 this season and had six meets remaining on the schedule against Western Michigan on Feb. 13, Arizona State on Feb. 22, Arizona on Feb. 27, BYU on March 6, and Iowa on March 13, as well as the Big 12 Gymnastics Championships on March 21.

The canceled meets include the annual “Beauty and the Beast” event, where the women’s gymnastics team and the wrestling team compete side-by-side in Hilton Coliseum.

The Iowa State athletics office said that fans who purchased tickets for Iowa State’s remaining home meets will receive information about refunds later this week.

Iowa State did not elaborate further on what transpired that left them with so few student-athletes, nor did it give any indication about the future of the program.
