University of Illinois point guard Jaylon Tate was arrested by Champaign police on Saturday after he allegedly punched his girlfriend in the face, reports the News-Gazette.
Police were called by a friend of the alleged victim to an apartment at 1:40 AM. When officers arrived, they noted she was spitting blood and had a swollen face. Officers talked to two of the woman’s friends, who said she had been hit “once or twice.”
The News-Gazette reports Tate denies any contact took place. He was booked in Champaign County Jail and will remain in jail until Sunday morning. The University of Illinois has suspended him from all team activities.

The victim is reportedly also an athlete at Illinois. She told police she had been hit in the face by Tate, but didn’t provide any other information.
“The victim didn’t want to tell us anything. She admits dating him,” Sgt. Bruce Ramseyer Ramseyer said. “Initially she said he hit her once. She didn’t want to answer any other questions.”
Tate is in his junior year and averaged 1.9 points and 2.6 assists in his third season on the team. He’s the second Illinois player to be detained this year after sophomore Leron Black was arrested for pulling a knife on a bouncer. Forward Darius Paul was arrested on a team trip in France back in August for public intoxication, among other charges.
The Fighting Illini’s season ended on Friday following an 89-58 loss to Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
