More than 10 years after Hurricane Katrina, many Louisiana residents have been comparing their current situation to the 2005 hurricane, with 40,000 homes impacted by ongoing flooding. Baton Rouge has been particularly hard-hit after the city received more than 20 inches of rain in two days, forcing numerous evacuations.

With many homes lost due and others damaged due to the raging waters, many are left not knowing what to do with their damaged homes. Thankfully, some good samaritans are stepping up to help the cause. That group of people includes the LSU baseball team. After receiving a call, the team headed out into the ravaged community to help out families in need. According to a SEC Network report from Kaylee Hartung, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri got a call to help former player Ben McDonald’s family. From there, Mainieri reached out to his team, and the players responded in large numbers and started helping out.

As Hartung reported, the Tigers didn’t stop after one house. Players headed to other houses and spent a large part of their day helping the community. Other LSU teams are getting involved in the cause, too, including the swimming and diving team and  the women’s soccer team:

Plenty of others have helped out, too, including LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette, who went out on a boat in the streets of Baton Rouge and helped rescue those in need.

Outside of Baton Rouge, other SEC schools such as South Carolina have gotten involved in helping out the city that is home to LSU.

Though many will soon turn their attention to the football team in Baton Rouge and how things go with Les Miles and company, let’s try and not forget how many in this area need help in their time of need.
