The No. 15 Miami Hurricanes took on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday, and one unconventional touchdown pass caught the attention of the college football world.
Hurricanes new head coach Mario Cristobal dialed up a flea flicker play in the third quarter of Saturday’s game. The play worked to great success, leading to a 35-yard touchdown pass from starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke (seen above during this game) to wide receiver Key’Shawn Smith.

This play helped Miami pull away from the Golden Eagles in what was a fairly competitive game for most of the contest. The Hurricanes ultimately emerged with a decisive 30-7 victory.
The Hurricanes came into this season with a ton of hype following Cristobal’s arrival from Oregon. To this point, the hype appears to be very justified.
Former Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, who won the 2021 Broyles Award for being the top assistant in the nation, also joined the Miami program this offseason. His arrival certainly seems to be making a huge impact.
The Hurricanes’ first two games of the season have been against relatively soft competition. But they will get their chance to stake their claim as a top team in the country this season when they head to College Station for a matchup against No. 6 Texas A&M next Saturday.
