The Miami sports community is a tight-knit one and arguably there is no more popular team (if there really is a popular team) than the Hurricanes from the University of Miami.

With the passing of Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez this past weekend, the Hurricanes are going to honor him by placing a decal on its helmets for this weekend’s game

The Hurricanes take on Georgia Tech this Saturday, and it will be interesting to see if the decal is the only way the team honors Fernandez at its game.

One of the most touching things since Fernandez’s passing has been learning just how much he was engrained in and meant to the Cuban community in Miami. No doubt his life and tragic death has expanded beyond his team and his sport but also to the greater community of Miami.

That is the mark of a good man and one who’s loss is going to be felt for some time. Big up to the Hurricanes for honoring this man who had so much left to give his sport and his community.

Perhaps this honor can also bring some luck, as crazy things have happened in Miami sports since his passing. That includes a wild 1st career grand slam for St. Louis Cardinals rookie (and fellow Cuban) Aledmys Diaz, Dee Gordon homering a pitch after honoring Fernandez,  and the impassioned play of an entire team of Marlins players wearing his No. 16 jersey.
