Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders made headlines again this week as “Prime Time” announced that former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has joined his staff. Sanders made the announcement himself on social media.

Sanders and Zimmer are very close to each other. Zimmer was Sanders’s position coach while they were with the Dallas Cowboys back in the 90s and remained friends over the years.

Before taking over the Vikings, Zimmer was a defensive assistant for the Falcons, Bengals, and Cowboys, winning a Super Bowl as part of Dallas’s staff in 1996. In eight seasons as the Vikings head coach, he went 72-56-1, won three NFC North titles, and took the team to the playoffs three times. He was fired this past offseason following back-to-back losing seasons.

Zimmer seems to be really excited about rejoining Sanders at JSU.

“I think the sky is the limit,” Zimmer said. “If some people would donate to him and his football program, there would be no stopping him. He would be competing with the Georgias and Alabamas and everybody around the country.”

That’s a tall order considering that JSU is in the SWAC. When it was suggested that Jackson State and Alabama face each other, Sanders admitted his program wasn’t quite ready to do that, but maybe in a few years.

Sanders has brought a lot of positive publicity to school and the reaction to Zimmer being brought on his staff reflects that.

Deion previously added former Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster to his staff as well. Sanders adding another big name to his staff is a big deal to a program that continues to make a lot of noise on the college football scene.
