While the only coach he ever hired just spoke at SEC Media Day, Missouri AD Mack Rhoades is packing his bags and heading to Waco to take the same job at Baylor after only 14 months leading the Tigers athletic department. Before Mizzou, Rhoades was the AD at Houston.
Rhoades has had to steer through quite a bit of chaos in Columbia during his tenure, not only regarding the football team’s willingness to boycott its game last season against BYU as part of the student protests against racism on campus but former head coach Gary Pinkel’s sudden resignation after he announced he had non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Now, Rhoades is heading to another school in turmoil. Baylor’s athletic department has been rocked by the internal investigation into allegations that the football coaching staff covered up rape allegations against multiple players. Art Briles was let go earlier this year as a result of the investigation.
Barry Odom, the aforementioned only coach hired by Rhoades, talked about his departure during Media Day.
“It was a long night,” Odom said. “I wish him the best. The timing, you’re never going to control timing. For me I’ve got an opportunity to lead our program. …Our athletic department, I’m going to take ownership in that and make Mizzou the best place it can be.”
