The Northwestern Wildcats are hosting the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, and one highlight play has emerged that many believe is in contention for catch of the year consideration at this point in the college football season.
In the first quarter of the game, Wildcats tight end Thomas Gordon made a huge one-handed catch on a bullet pass from Northwestern quarterback Ryan Hilinski.

Junior tight end Gordon has not been all that much of a receiving option for the Wildcats thus far, which makes this catch even more impressive. He appeared in two games in 2019 and in every game in 2020, but didn’t record a receiving stat until 2021, where he posted two catches for three yards. This year, though, he posted two catches for 39 yards in Northwestern’s Week 0 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Ireland. And he’s off to a great start here in their second game, with this catch
This catch was one of the sole bright spots in what has been otherwise a disaster of a start for the Wildcats, who ended the first quarter at a 14-0 deficit against Duke and trailed 21-14 at the half. They came into Saturday’s game against the Blue Devils as a 9.5-point favorite, but the first half didn’t go smoothly for them.
More catches like the extremely impressive one that Gordon made in this game will certainly help Northwestern as they attempt to climb out of this deficit.
