The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will open their 2022 college football season in what is widely considered one of the most hostile environments in college football when they travel to Ohio Stadium to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. But one player doesn’t seem overly impressed by the massive stadium.

According to Notre Dame beat writer Tyler Horka, Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer doesn’t think playing in Ohio Stadium will be any different than playing in any other stadium, saying he’s “not worried about it.”

“I don’t think it’s any different than the other stadiums we’re going to be playing in this year,” Mayer said. “To me, it’s like, ‘home game, away game, just go play football.’ I’m not worried about it.”

Ohio Stadium, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season after it was completed in 1920, is one of the largest stadiums in all of college football. The Horseshoe, as it was nicknamed for its original shape, has an official capacity of 102,780 – behind only Penn State’s Beaver Stadium and The Big House at Michigan’s in terms of crowd capacity.

So while Mayer may be worried about playing in Ohio Stadium for the season opener, it will almost certainly be the largest crowd he ever plays in front of in his life.
