Oklahoma State University announced that 21-year-old Cowboys basketball player Tyrek Coger died during a team workout on Thursday in Stillwater.

According to the university, Coger collapsed during a team workout on Thursday afternoon, and was rushed to Stillwater Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:23 PM.

The Stillwater News Press reports that Coger collapsed due to heat exhaustion:

A call came in to dispatch at about 5:30 p.m. for a man who had collapsed on the stairs of Boone Pickens Stadium from heat exhaustion.

Coger was from Raleigh, North Carolina, and was a junior college transfer from Cape Fear Community College.

Cowboys head coach Brad Underwood released a statement on the horrible news:

“Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy. Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through,” said Underwood, who is traveling back from a recruiting trip in Las Vegas, Nevada.
