Things are not going well for the Georgetown Hoyas.

The once-dominant college basketball program is in dire straights. The Hoyas are currently 6-20 overall and 0-15 in Big East games. If trends hold, they’re on pace for what might be their worst overall season since the early 1970s, before John Thompson turned them into a powerhouse.

Head coach Patrick Ewing, arguably the biggest star in program history, was brought in to revitalize the team and return it to glory. However, in five seasons at the helm, Ewing’s Hoyas have been the definition of middling. After a 15-15 first season, Georgetown showed life with a 19-14 year that ended in the NIT. After a disappointing 15-17 finish the following year, Georgetown returned to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2015, though they lost in the first round.

That brief moment of potential has been lost to the current season’s disappointments and many people around the college basketball world have assumed that it’s just a question of when Georgetown will fire Ewing. However, according to a report from FanDuel’s Jon Rothstein, that could be a little trickier than expected.

Per Rothstein, Ewing quietly received a contract extension after last season’s run to the Big East Tournament title and the NCAA Tournament.

The terms of Ewing’s new deal are unknown but his initial contract was set to go through the 2022-23 season. Per Rothstein, Ewing “still has tremendous support internally at Georgetown.”

Still, the lack of overall success under Ewing has a lot of people around the college basketball world wondering what the school is going to do knowing that they just signed him to an extension.
