Joey Julius

Penn State’s hard-hitting kicker Joey Julius is opening up about his struggles with eating disorders.

Julius has made headlines for demolishing kick returners this season for the Nittany Lions. Checking in at over 250 pounds, Julius’ weight has been a point of interest considering his position and punishing hits.

In a Facebook post, Julius commented about his struggles with eating disorders, depression, and anxiety related to binge eating. He wrote it forced him to miss action in both the spring and summer, as he checked into McCallum Place to deal with the issue. It’s a heartfelt piece.

Kudos to Julius for finding the courage to share his struggles with eating disorders. On the surface, we see a fat kicker and poke fun at his unusual position considering his weight when deep down, Julius has struggled personally and professionally with weight gain. I can’t imagine reading multiple stories on his portly size helped him in his battle. By sharing his struggles, hopefully he’ll encourage others also struggling with eating disorders and related problems to speak up and deal with the problems head on.

Julius’ unique football style make him a blast to watch on the field. Being candid about his problems with weight gain and eating disorders makes him an even greater person off of it.
