James Franklin Punch

Before Penn State ultimately lost in crushing fashion in the Rose Bowl, the Nittany Lions’ sideline was as electric as the offense in the third quarter, and it led to a celebratory sideline punch.

Not one to keep his emotions tied down, Penn State head coach James Franklin couldn’t help but show his enthusiasm for the calls being made by offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, leading the head coach to give his best offseason hire a punch to the chest.

With Penn State up one-point early in the third quarter, quarterback Trace McSorley connected with Chris Godwin down the left sideline. Godwin took advantage of his defender falling down and dashed his way down the field for a touchdown. In celebration, Franklin turned to Moorhead and punched him in the chest, causing the offensive coordinator to turn away and shield himself from another blow to come.

Can someone please take this video and add Punch-Out sound effects? Thanks.

Maybe Franklin should be a bit more careful with Moorhead. After all, Moorhead could very well be a hot name in the coaching carousel over the next year if he continues to thrive as Penn State’s offensive coordinator for another season.

The McSorley-to-Godwin touchdown was the third touchdown scored on three consecutive offensive snaps for Penn State. Penn State scored a touchdown on their final offensive snap of the first half with Mike Gesicki pulling down a McSorley pass in the end zone. Saquon Barkley uncorked an absolutely phenomenal 79-yard touchdown run on Penn State’s first offensive snap of the second half. Then this pass to Godwin worked out well. Moments later, after Penn State forced a turnover to set up an extremely short field, McSorley took the first snap and ran in for six more points for a fourth touchdown scored on four straight offensive plays.

While Franklin was seen giving Moorhead a punch to the chest, it was USC that would deliver a swift kick to the groin by scoring 17 unanswered points to claw back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win in the highest-scoring Rose Bowl in history.
