It has not been a good year for Rutgers football. In fact, it has been a no good very bad year for Rutgers football.

The Scarlet Knights suffered their third shutout loss of at least 49 points this season when the moribund Michigan State Spartans smashed them by a score of 49-0 in East Lansing. At least that still wasn’t as bad as their 58-0 loss in Columbus to the Ohio State Buckeyes or even worse, their 78-0 home loss to the Michigan Wolverines. At least their loss to Michigan bought people some very nice and inexpensive steak dinners.

However, it was the most recent loss to MSU that finally sent Rutgers fans over the edge with their team now 2-8 on the season with their lone wins coming against Howard and New Mexico and 0-7 in Big Ten play.

How did NJ.com choose to recap the game? With pictures of cute puppies to console Rutgers fans.

The following two pictures may be the best combination between a picture and text that has appeared in sports media this year.

Note: that last one is not a picture of the Rutgers defense.

On the bright side, the Rutgers special teams received a “C” grade, so at least that’s somewhere to start! The whole slideshow is really worth a look if you want to take a deep dive into what exactly is happening with Rutgers football this season and how they got so bad so quickly. It’s easy to forget, but the Scarlet knights have actually made a bowl game in 9 of their last 11 seasons. How they got from there to losing three games to conference opposition by a combined score of 185-0 so quickly is mind-boggling.

Or, you could check it out if you just want to see more cute puppy pictures and videos. Just do that instead.
