The SMU Mustangs were one of the better men’s basketball teams that didn’t make the NCAA Tournament this past season, finishing the year at 24-9. That put them in second place in the American Athletic Conference.
The team will go through some big changes next season, with longtime head coach Tim Jankovic retiring after the season. Jankovic had been with the SMU program since the 2012 season.
New head coach Rob Lanier will seemingly have his hands full next season. Reports emerged Monday that star point guard Kendric Davis has entered the transfer portal.
SMU star guard Kendrick Davis has entered the transfer portal, source told ESPN. AAC Player of the Year. Averaged 19.4 points, 4.4 assists and shot 37.2% from 3. Put up 19.0 points and 7.6 assists last season. Potentially the new No. 1 player in the transfer portal.

Davis is coming off an excellent year at SMU, averaging 19.4 points per game and winning the AAC Player of the Year. And it seems that there are a number of options available for him.
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein has said that Davis will go through the 2022 NBA Draft process to attempt to improve his stock in the draft. But Rothstein added that Davis hasn’t fully committed to leaving SMU, despite entering the transfer portal.
SMU's Kendric Davis tells me that he's entered the transfer portal with the option to return to SMU while also going through the 2022 NBA Draft process.

Davis could potentially be one of the biggest college basketball stars to enter the portal this offseason. He could be a huge addition to any team for the 2022-23 season.
Should he decide not to enter the NBA Draft and return back to college basketball, he will be in his fifth season of college basketball. And veteran point guards the caliber of Davis are certainly hard to come by.
