The Youngstown State Penguins turned an absolutely incredible triple play during the team’s 6-5 win over Robert Morris on Tuesday.

The Robert Morris Colonials had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the first inning of Tuesday’s contest. And then after one swing, the inning was over!

The Penguins pieced together a 4-6 triple play. Yes, a two-digit triple-play.

Junior second baseman Sara Fessler snagged a liner on the right side and as her momentum was taking her to first base, she stepped on the bag before firing the ball to the shortstop, junior Elyssa Imler, who stepped on second to force the triple play.

Due to it being an 0-2 count, nobody on the Robert Morris team was in motion, so it was not a botched hit-and-run attempt. Rather, the Colonials got a bad read on the ball and were caught trying to be too aggressive on the base paths.

In turn, the video of the highlight-reel play gained traction online. The NCAA’s official softball account reposted the highlight to Twitter where it’s received more than 33,000 views.

That inning proved to be costly for a Robert Morris side that surrendered two leads on Tuesday. After going down 5-2, Youngstown State rallied to score four unanswered runs and would walk off in extra innings. Surely, the triple play helped keep the game within reach.
