One of the biggest storylines in college football this offseason is the starting quarterback battle at Texas between Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card.

Card is the returning starter and offers far more experience of the two, appearing in nine games throughout his college career. In seven appearances with the Longhorns last season, Card threw for 590 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception on 51-of-83 passing.

Ewers, meanwhile, has not yet even attempted a collegiate pass but was widely considered one of the top quarterback prospects of all time coming out of high school. The five-star quarterback ultimately signed with Ohio State out of high school, entering the college ranks a year early in order to profit off of his name, image, and likeness. After spending nearly his entire true freshman season on the bench, Ewers transferred to Texas in the spring.

One of them will be the Longhorns’ starting quarterback when the team takes the field this fall. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian isn’t ready to make that decision yet, but he doesn’t believe the decision will take as long as it did last year, according to Texas Longhorns beat writer Brian Davis.

“No, we haven’t made a decision yet,” Sarkisian said. “But I don’t think it will take as long as last fall took us.”

Last year, Texas did announce its starting quarterback until less than a week before the start of the 2021 season, ultimately naming Card the starter on Aug. 28.

The winner of this year’s competition will start for the Longhorns in their season on September 3.
