Templer chopper

College football’s annual cattle call, a.k.a. national signing day, is inching closer and closer. For new head coaches, that means scramble mode.

It also means maximizing your time with each recruit you have to secure who is already committed and for those whom you want in the program down the stretch. How does one do that? Some choose private jets to criss-cross the country, others go with the car trips around their states.

But for new Temple head coach Geoff Collins there is a new toy in the arsenal — a helicopter.

Yes, he is chartering a helicopter to best maximize his time in reaching out to recruits in the Philadelphia area.

With players skydiving, racing animals, and doing all sorts of crazy things to get attention on their commitments to whatever college these days (looking at you, Bleacher Report), it appears coaches have to step up their game too.

So why not make a really big entrance and land said helicopter right in the backyard of a suburban recruit or at the local parks around Philly, right? Nothing impresses kids these days than the flashy entrance and the latest in trends (that’s never really changed in the history of teenagers and pop culture).

It isn’t just Philly either, as Collins’ chopper has been sighted in places like Lancaster County. You know, some 60 miles or so outside of Philly. A chopper ride for 30 minutes or an hour in a car? What would you pick when you have serious business to take care of?

Collins’ move is especially shrewd when you consider the Owls’ battle cry of #BirdsOfPrey. Clearly, the strategy is working for recruits.

Helicopters are nice, but we want to know which coach is going to start pushing for their school to just buy one of the old Concord jets for their personal use. Now that would cut down on travel time.

Why not just use the millions of dollars a coach gets every season and invest in teleportation technology? After all, shouldn’t we all be flying in cars and doing all sorts of Jetson-like things by now?

I guess college football coaches will just have to settle for the lazy technology of choppers for now.
