The overall results of the preseason coaches poll were mostly unsurprising. The Alabama Crimson Tide led the way at No. 1 followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 2 and the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 3. Those three teams are the frontrunners to win this season’s national title with one sportsbook’s odds suggesting that no other team really even has a chance.
It’s not at all surprising that Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State trio led all teams in first-place votes in the first coaches poll of the season. But according to Brett McMurphy of The Action Network, one shocking team also received a first-place vote: the Texas Longhorns.
First place votes received in preseason USA Today coaches poll:
Alabama 64
Georgia 6
Ohio State 5
Texas 1Coaches' ballots are not made public until the final poll released after @CFBPlayoff

While Texas is one of the most iconic programs in the country, the Longhorns are coming off of an abysmal 2021 season. Under new head coach Steve Sarkisian last season, Texas finished with a 5-7 record, losing six of its last seven games to miss a bowl game altogether.
The Longhorns did add some talent during the offseason, landing Ohio State transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers. The former Buckeye was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class and is tied as the highest-ranked quarterback prospect ever with former Texas quarterback Vince Young.
Still, it’s unreasonable to rank a 5-7 team No. 1 to begin the next season, and the college football world called out the insanity.
Wait…Texas?!?! https://t.co/5Nl9mJmUYp

Ok, who is the person that gave Texas a #1 vote https://t.co/BTLznYUmcx

What's wild is there are only 65 voters, so there's a better than zero chance that Texas' 1st place vote is a hilarious typo. I'm all for teams getting roasted for no fault of their ownhttps://t.co/PN1FaSTIp2

The Longhorns will try to live up to this lone voter’s lofty preseason projection this season.
