Eating on the job as a fast-food employee is a big no-no. As a teen, new Texas coach Tom Herman loved pastrami so much, it cost him his job at Subway.

The sandwich-artist-turned-Longhorns-coach, now 41, admitted to the Dallas Morning News that he was amazed at how much pastrami Subway fridges can hold.

“I used to love the pastrami,” he says. “They had those big walk-in refrigerators. I was standing in there one day, with the door shut, just throwing pastrami in my mouth.

“It was like something out of a movie. I’ve got this bin of meat, throwing meat in my mouth, the door swings open and it’s the owner.”

Herman’s secret pastrami buffet was shut down after he got caught by his manager. That ended his time at Subway, which he estimates lasted four-to-six months.

“He goes, ‘Get out. Don’t come back.”

Personally, given the choice of what Subway meat to feast on, pastrami would be near the bottom of my list (shout-out to turkey breast). For Herman, the heart wanted what the heart wanted. The pastrami was his crutch, and it cost him his job.

Of course, eating pastrami by the mouthful shouldn’t be an issue for Herman anymore. The coach’s five-year contract is worth nearly $29 million. That will afford him the chance to buy as much pastrami as he desires. Still, if I’m Subway, I send a boatload of pastrami to Herman’s house and sign him to a sponsorship deal. It’s a win-win.
