The University of Virginia athletics department announced Wednesday the cancelation of Saturday’s home football game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
The game was set to be the final home game of the Cavaliers‘ 2022 season.
The announcement comes in the wake of the shooting deaths of three Cavaliers football players: Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry.
Two others were injured in the attack and are expected to recover from their injuries.
Former Cavaliers football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. has been arrested and accused of the premeditated murder that happened on a university bus as the victims returned from a field trip.
Jones is set to be arraigned on multiple charges Wednesday morning. He was a member of the Virginia football team in 2018 but did not play in any games. He hasn’t been a part of the program since early 2021. Jones’ father said the suspect “had some problems” in his personal life.
The Virginia athletic department has yet to decide if the Cavaliers will play Nov. 26th against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg in what’s scheduled as their regular season finale.
Virginia says refund information for the Coastal Carolina game will “be issued at a later time.”
The Cavaliers are 3-7 on the season while being 1-6 in ACC play.
