The Michigan State Spartans’ season was on the line on Sunday as they trailed the Ohio State Buckeyes 7-3 in the ninth inning in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. What do you do when your season is on the brink and an unlikely rally is needed? You construct the biggest rally cap you can possibly make.

That’s what a couple of Michigan State players decided to do, as they stacked more than 10 hats on a teammate who was chilling in the dugout. The two players worked like surgeons conducting open heart surgery, as they try to balance the hats without having them topple like a Jenga set. Miraculously, they manage to stack an unthinkable amount of hats on their teammate.

Unfortunately for the hat-stackers and their Spartans teammates, the rally cap didn’t do its magic and allow the club to rally. Michigan State fell to Ohio State 7-3, as the Buckeyes advanced in the Big Ten tournament, and the Spartans’ season was over.

Considering how impressive the rally cap was, it’s a shame that it didn’t work. It takes plenty of skill and precision to build something so glorious, especially in a pressure situation like the Big Ten tournament. Hats off (or on?) to those players who tried to rally with the hats. You did a wonderful job, even if it didn’t propel you to a surprise victory.
