Well, the first round of the NFL Draft lived up to the hype, delivering its fair share of surprises and shocking moments.
We are listing some of the biggest surprises in the first round of the NFL Draft.
5. Neither the Saints nor the Giants picked a quarterback
I know it was a shock to both Saints and Giants fans to discover that their teams who desperately needed help at the QB position, decided to go in another direction. At least the Giants got Malik Nabers, the wide receiver out of LSU that could hopefully help Daniel Jones next season. The Saints, however, picked offensive lineman Taliese Fuaga out of Oregon State which is not a bad pick, but in the grand scheme of things, the Saints needed a quarterback more than an O-lineman, but you better believe Saint fans weren’t to thrill to see them pass up a good quarterback in the first round.
4. Cowboys passed on Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid Mckinstry
Two of the best defensive corners in the game fell into the laps of the Cowboys but instead, they picked yet another offensive lineman. Jerry Jones might need to rewind the tape and watch how terrible his defense got picked apart last year in the playoffs by Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love who threw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys also needed a running back and decided to pass up on that too. Instead, Dallas traded down and the Lions got Terrion Arnold. May be the Cowboys will pick up McKinstry and a running back later in the draft.
3. Bo Nix to the Denver Broncos
This was kind of a shock only because Bo Nix wasn’t talked about much by the Broncos. Clearly, unlike some of the teams mentioned, the Broncos needed a quarterback and head coach Sean Payton fulfilled that need. Nix was a Heisman runner-up and a guy who could help this team, smart move on Payton’s part.
2. Buffalo Bills did not select wide receiver
What exactly were the Buffalo Bills thinking Thursday night by NOT drafting a wide receiver and then trading their pick to the Kansas City Chiefs who of course picked a wide receiver? Bills fans must be livid to wake up Friday morning to see not only did their team not get a wide receiver, but they allowed the Chiefs to sneak up and grab one.
1. Atlanta Falcons picked Michael Penix Jr.
This was the biggest shock of the night, the most talked about, and the most puzzling. The Atlanta Falcons, who just had signed quarterback Kurt Cousins to a HUGE contract, drafted Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Everyone was shocked, including Cousins who didn’t understand why was he signed if they were going to pick a quarterback anyway. Some NFL analysts understood why they did it because they just couldn’t pass up that kind of generational talent but still…
To pass up a wide receiver to help Cousins to pick up Penix? Makes no sense to most including Falcons fans.
