Jason Verrett played in only one game for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 before tearing his ACL and ending his season. Verrett was on the road to recovery in 2022. He was practicing with the 49ers and appeared close to making his 2022 debut. Unfortunately for Verrett, that will not happen.

On Thursday, the 49ers announced that Verrett tore his Achilles tendon on Wednesday.

Injuries have dominated the career of Verrett since he was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the then-San Diego Chargers.

Verrett has suited up in only 40 games. He missed the entirety of the 2018 season after tearing an Achilles tendon. He played in only one game for the 49ers in both 2019 and 2021 and suited up six times for the Chargers as a rookie in 2014 and four times in 2016. Verrett has only reached double-digits in games played twice, playing in 14 games for the Chargers in 2015 and 13 for the 49ers in 2020.

People in the NFL world sent their best wishes following his latest setback.

It is beyond unfortunate to see any player suffer through injuries at this kind of rate.

When he’s been able to suit up, Verrett has been a strong player. He made the Pro Bowl for the Chargers in 2015. In 2020, while many other key 49ers suffered season-ending injuries early in the season, Verrett was a rare bright spot, intercepting two passes and making a career-high 50 tackles, while assisting on 10 others.

Time will tell if Verrett can come back from this latest setback. He’ll be 32 by the time the 2023 season gets going. So, his age and injury history are certainly not working in his favor. If he can manage to come back, it will be a great story.
