Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers don’t appear likely for another year together. The expectation is Garoppolo will elect free agency and join a new team for the 2023 NFL season. The two sides may be further split than previously believed, which says a lot considering the situation.

Tim Kawakami of The Athletic answered fan questions in his mailbag post. One discussed the iciness between Garoppolo and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Kawakami provided details of dissension in their ranks.

Garoppolo won 42 combined regular-season (38-17 record) and postseason (4-2) games for the 49ers. He could’ve been a Super Bowl MVP if he’d made one or two more plays a few years ago. He’s always been a very popular figure in the locker room. It wasn’t wrong to expect something a little warmer from the 49ers’ brass for Garoppolo’s franchise exit, right?

Well, I checked around the team and discovered: Yes, the relationship between Garoppolo and Shanahan/Lynch seems to have gone a bit south in the days or weeks leading up to the NFC Championship Game loss in Philadelphia. I don’t know if there was a specific blow-up or conversation that led to this. I don’t know what the main issue was. We know that Garoppolo won a lot of games in his six seasons with the 49ers and partially bailed them out this season by agreeing to come back after believing he was going to get traded or cut last offseason.

Plus, on the Pat McAfee ShowNFL Network insider Ian Rapoport noted legitimate awkwardness and weirdness that they felt watching Garoppolo practice on a separate field, while also noting the Niners drafted his replacement.

“Did they handle it so well we couldn’t have expected that natural humans probably going to have a little bitterness towards each other because of what took place?” McAfee asked. Rapoport responded, “They handled it incredibly well. And I still cannot believe, like you were saying, he’s practicing on the rehab field. And we’re all kind of watching him like, throw, with the real team over there. It was weird.” McAfee grumbled that people were tossing a narrative. “And he was getting blamed, ‘Well, if you didn’t ruin your shoulder, we would trade you,” he said.

“On the other hand,” Rapoport said. “They drafted his replacement before he did anything wrong. I don’t know that he doesn’t like them, but it’s time to move on.”

It doesn’t sound like Jimmy Garoppolo will be sending the 49ers Christmas cards next season, to say the least.
