The San Francisco 49ers made an unexpected splash on Tuesday.
Coming off a 42-19 drubbing of the Philadelphia Eagles, the 49ers have elected to make an addition to their defensive backfield. According to multiple reports, San Francisco has signed long-time versatile DB Logan Ryan.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported the news of Ryan’s imminent addition to San Francisco’s 53-man roster.
Rapoport reported the news on X, the popular website formerly known as Twitter.
“Source: Long-time versatile DB Logan Ryan has signed with the #49ers, a potential big-time addition for December and their playoff run,” Rapoport said. “Most recently, with the #Bucs and #Giants, Ryan lands in SF.”

The 32-year-old Ryan last appeared in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. In nine games (six starts), he recorded 37 total tackles, three passes defended an interception. However, much of his time with his fourth NFL team was marred by a foot injury.
While his most recent stop was in Tampa Bay, the former third-round pickout is more known for his time with the New England Patriots, who drafted him out of Rutgers in 2013. He would later leave for the Tennessee Titans in free agency before spending two seasons with the New York Giants.
Ryan has 19 interceptions, 85 passes defended, 13 sacks, and 26 quarterback hits for his career.
He figures to provide more depth to the secondary’s backend, which has seen Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum placed on injured reserve.
