Trey Lance sends clear message to 49ers front office

The San Francisco 49ers lost executive Ran Carthon to the Tennessee Titans this offseason, with Carthon signing on with the Titans as their new general manager. This sturred some controversy around quarterback Trey Lance. Lance cleared this up in a conversation with 49ers quarterback coach Quincy Avery on Thursday.

The controversy stems from an Instagram story posted by Lance of the fingers crossed emoji after Carthon signed with Tennessee, which led many to believe that Lance may be interested in being traded to the Titans.

Lance cleared the air on Thursday in a discussion with Quincy Avery on AMP, saying that he was just happy Carthon got a chance in Tennessee, and that he doesn’t ever want to play anywhere other than San Francisco.

“So just getting to know someone’s family like that, I was super happy for him for the opportunity,” said Lance on AMP transcribed by 49erswebzone.com. “So, yeah, the fingers crossed emoji is not like, ‘Man, I’m crossing my fingers I’m going to be a Tennessee Titan.’ I cross my fingers, man. I love it here. I don’t ever want to be anywhere else.”

Prior to this past season, Lance appeared to very clearly be the quarterback of the future for the 49ers. However, that may be in question due to the emergence of rookie sensation Brock Purdy.

Purdy played a big part in the 49ers making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, and may have gained the favor of the 49ers locker room. Star tight end George Kittle recently said that it is “Purdy’s job to lose”.

Trey Lance has made it clear that he won’t shy away from a potential quarterback battle ahead of the 2023-24 season, which may be exactly what is coming for the 49ers.
