Former Florida Gators and New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has frequently been in the news since his April sentencing to life in prison for first-degree murder, from being placed on suicide watch to involvement in three separate prison fights to tattoos to flirty responses to pen pals, but his latest headline might be the most notable one yet. Cheryl Fiandaca of Boston NBC affiliate WHDH reported Friday that Hernandez has been sent to a segregated unit following the discovery of a homemade knife in his cell:
Aaron Hernandez has been moved to a segregated unit at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center after guards found a shank in his cell, according to sources.
Corrections officers found the prison-made knife during a shakedown of his prison block.
Sources told 7News’ Cheryl Fiandaca the incident happened on Thursday.

Hernandez was immediately taken out of general population and put into a segregated unit.
We’ll see if this results in further punishment for Hernandez or not. At the very least, he’s certainly finding ways to stay in the news even from behind bars. He’s likely to be in there for a while, too; while he’s already been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd, he’s still awaiting trial on two further murder charges. That trial is set to begin in January.
