Aaron Rodgers Packers Camp 08/02 Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) has some fun during training camp Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at Ray Nitschke Field in Green Bay, Wis. Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Apc Packtrainingcamp 0802221036djpc

Aaron Rodgers was hoping that a few more young players might end up making the cut this season. Not only was one of his favorite wide receivers cut, but the Green Packers also decided to cut promising rookie offensive lineman Caleb Jones, much to the quarterback’s chagrin.

Jones was an undrafted rookie free agent whom Rodgers liked, but the Packers didn’t let the quarterback’s influence decide for them, so they kept rookie seventh-round pick, Rasheed Walker, over Jones when trimming their roster.

“I thought Caleb had a great camp and deserved to be on the 53,” Rodgers said. “Lucky to get him back on the [practice] squad. Looks like he has a bright future in this league. You can’t teach that kind of size. But, take the 6-9, 340 out of the way, the way that he worked from spring to fall camp and then throughout fall camp, he has what it takes to be a player in this league. I told him that a couple weeks ago.”

Rodgers may be disappointed that Jones didn’t make the 53-man roster of this team, but he seems to be hinting at the fact that all that can change shortly.

“You guys know it: Every year, there’s 53 on the active, there’s 16 on the p-squad. That 16 is never the same 16 Day 1 as it is to Week 18 at the end of the season. Those guys will be elevated; some guys won’t be here. The season really begins for everybody next week and the roster you see right now will not be the same roster in Week 18.”
